“I woke up this morning extremely tired. I guess I should have gone to sleep earlier, but I was restless. I was late today for my psychology class, and what made it so bad was that it was an 11:30 a.m. class. I have no reason to be late all the time. I get lax with my punctuality. I have to try harder, much harder. I've been thinking about my brother lately. I hope he's okay because I haven't heard from him in a while. I'll just keep him in my prayers and hope he makes it through his troubled times. He's caught up with the wrong people, and he seems to take over him. Growing up in Brooklyn is not easy. I just happened to be stronger than my brother. I'm really concerned about his well-being.”

Have you ever had one of those mornings when getting out of bed feels like a monumental task? We've all been there, and sometimes, those struggles extend into our professional lives, impacting how we lead and perform. Today, I'm sharing a personal journal entry that sheds light on leadership, resilience, and the personal challenges we face along the way.
Self-Discipline and Punctuality
My struggle with punctuality isn't just about being late to class—it's a reflection of how minor lapses in discipline can affect overall performance. As leaders, we must recognize that our habits, even the small ones, significantly impact our effectiveness and credibility. Striving to improve self-discipline is crucial. It sets an excellent example for our teams and students and helps us maintain the high standards we expect from others.
Empathy and Support
My concern for my brother, caught in difficult circumstances, highlights the importance of empathy in leadership. Understanding and supporting our colleagues, students, and their families through their struggles can foster a more inclusive and caring environment. Leadership often means carrying the weight of others' burdens while striving to remain strong and resilient.
Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Life's challenges, whether they come from personal or professional fronts, test our resilience. Our ability to overcome these hurdles and continue to lead with purpose and passion is what sets us apart. Growing up in environments like Brooklyn, where challenges abound, shapes our leadership journey. It makes us more empathetic, vigilant and determined to create change.
Community and Connection
Leadership is not just about guiding others but also about staying connected to the communities we serve. My concern for my brother is a reminder that our communities are integral to our leadership journey. Supporting and uplifting those around us, especially during tough times, strengthens our collective resilience and fosters a sense of belonging and purpose.
As you lead today, reflect on your habits and the small changes you can make to enhance your effectiveness. Reach out to someone who might need your support, and remember that every step you take toward self-improvement positively impacts those around you.
