Mastering the Balancing Act

"Today, I have to take my make-up in psychology. Hopefully, I’ll do well or at least better than what I did on the last one. Since psychology is my major, I should excel in that class. It looks terrible to fail or not have gotten a good grade in my major. I have to meet with my tutor today, and I also have a meeting with the political action committee. I’m swamped and loaded with work to do. Hopefully, this will be the weekend I go home and surprise my family. I believe escaping for a day or two is the only medicine I need right now."


Ever feel like you're juggling more tasks than you have hands? Balancing workloads and taking breaks is a fine art many of us still master. This balancing act is about managing our to-do lists and making conscious daily choices that shape our growth and well-being.


The journal entry above describes a time when I was overwhelmed with responsibilities. I had to take a make-up exam in psychology, my major, so the pressure was on me to perform well. I also had a tutoring session and a meeting with the political action committee. It was one of those days when my schedule felt like a marathon with no finish line.


As leaders, it's easy to think we need to excel in everything, especially in our areas of expertise. We often set high expectations for ourselves, fearing that not meeting them could reflect poorly on our abilities. However, this experience taught me that acknowledging our limits and understanding the need for rest is crucial. It's okay to feel swamped sometimes, but finding time to recharge is essential.


That weekend, I planned a surprise visit to my family, believing that a brief escape from my responsibilities was the remedy I needed. And guess what? It was. The relief and rejuvenation I felt after that break was invigorating. Taking a break doesn't mean you're neglecting your duties; it means you're giving yourself the space to return stronger and more focused. This concept of balancing workload with well-deserved breaks is not just a momentary fix; it’s a skill developed through daily choices and self-awareness.


As leaders, we must recognize that our well-being directly impacts our professional effectiveness. It's about making intentional choices—knowing when to push forward and when to step back. By doing so, we take care of ourselves and set a powerful example for those we lead, showing them the importance of self-care and balance in a high-pressure environment.


So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, remember that it's okay to take a break. It's a learned process that, with practice, can help us maintain our passion and effectiveness in our roles. After all, a well-rested leader is a more resilient and inspiring one. Prioritizing self-care means taking care of yourself and ensuring your professional effectiveness.
